Calculated from the decree, not estimated
This page sets out exactly what the calculation does, and what it cannot do.
A county vignette costs HUF 7,190 for 13 months, an annual national one HUF 61,760, for a passenger car (D1); other vehicle categories pay differently. So the question is rarely whether you need a vignette, but which one, and how many. That is hard to answer at a glance, because a vignette is not valid up to the county border.
The four steps
- 1The route
We find the road route between the two settlements and match the track against the tolled network. That is how it becomes clear which stretches you drive on a toll road and which you do not.
- 2The chainage
We work out the kilometre chainage of every tolled point. The official chainage of 546 junctions gives the fixed reference points, and everything in between is measured against them.
- 3The entitlements
Annex 1 of the decree states, in 46 lines covering 22 roads, which county vignette is valid from which chainage to which. For every point on your route we check which vignettes cover it.
- 4The cheapest set
Knowing the coverage, we pick the cheapest set that covers ALL of your tolled points. This is an exact solution, not an approximation, and every recommended vignette can be traced back to the annex line that justifies it.
One example that shows why a map is not enough
Three lines of the annex meet on the M1:

The Pest county vignette ends at 5+381, and the Komárom-Esztergom one only starts at 93+520. The 88.1 km in between is covered by the Fejér county vignette alone — even though this stretch of road is not in Fejér county. Anyone picking vignettes off a map collects a fine right here.

- The network
- 5,653 tolled road sections and 546 junctions from OpenStreetMap; the chainage is calculated from these.
- The map
- The borders of 19 counties from OSM admin_level=6, with 3,157 settlements. The border serves the display: the vignette decision comes from chainage, not from which county you happen to be in.
- The checks
- The calculation is a self-contained, tested module: derived cases and routes with a recorded baseline are run before every change. We have a coverage table for the entire tolled network, so the answer is not limited to the routes we happened to try.
What we cannot tell you
On a small part of the tolled network (4 km in total today, for example at the Pécs end of the M60 and on two short stretches of the M2) no county entitlement is valid at all: a national vignette is required there. We say so rather than hide it, because otherwise you would assume a county vignette is enough.
County vignette prices are no longer uniform from 2026. Where we have no official price list for a discount, we calculate with the standard price: better to show something more expensive than to promise less than the real cost.
